Basic Information
Full Name: Muhammad ibn Abdullah
Title: Seal of the Prophets (Khatam an-Nabiyyin)
Born: 570 CE in Mecca, Arabia (Year of the Elephant)
Died: 632 CE in Medina, Arabia
Parents: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib (father, deceased before birth) and Amina bint Wahb (mother, died when he was six).
Clan: Banu Hashim, a respected clan of the Quraysh tribe.
Early Life
1. Orphaned Childhood: Raised first by his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, and later by his uncle, Abu Talib.
2. Character: Known for his honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity. Nicknamed "Al-Ameen" (the trustworthy) and "As-Sadiq" (the truthful).
3. Marriage: At the age of 25, married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, a wealthy widow and businesswoman. Their marriage was a loving partnership, and they had six children.
Prophethood
1. Revelation: At 40, while meditating in the Cave of Hira near Mecca, the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared to him, delivering the first verses of the Qur'an:
“Read! In the name of your Lord who created…” (Qur'an 96:1-5).
2. Message: Preached monotheism, justice, compassion, and equality, urging people to worship Allah alone and abandon idolatry.
3. Opposition: Faced intense persecution from Meccan elites who opposed his challenge to their social and religious norms.
Migration (Hijra)
In 622 CE, due to increasing hostility, Muhammad and his followers migrated to Medina (then Yathrib). This event, known as the Hijra, marks the start of the Islamic calendar.
In Medina
1. Leadership: Became a statesman, uniting tribes under the first Islamic constitution, the Constitution of Medina, which established rights and responsibilities for Muslims, Jews, and others.
2. Battles: Engaged in key battles such as Badr, Uhud, and the Trench to defend the Muslim community.
3. Treaty of Hudaybiyyah: A pivotal peace agreement with the Quraysh of Mecca, later leading to the peaceful conquest of Mecca in 630 CE.
Legacy and Teachings
1. Qur'an: The final revelation of Allah, preserved as the ultimate guide for life.
2. Sunnah: His sayings (hadiths), actions, and approvals form a model for Muslims to emulate.
3. Ethics: Advocated kindness, humility, and justice. Famously said:
“The best of you are those who are best to their families.”
“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”
4. Universal Mercy: Called "Rahmatul-lil-Alameen" (Mercy to all worlds), emphasizing his compassion for humanity and creation.
Death and Burial
Passed away at the age of 63 after a brief illness.
Buried in Medina, in what is now the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi).
